Tornadoes

“While going off route for an Internet WiFi signal at a motel in Dodge City, KS, we met a

ViolentSkies.com storm chaser who told us he wouldn’t have been there unless there was

a good chance of severe weather including tornadoes. On Friday afternoon/evening in Eastern

Kansas, severe weather hit TS #28 which was evacuated, and moved indoors.” said journalist

Danny Chew last year during RAAM.

Tornadoes do happen more frequently in this region of the United States, but why? What is

a tornado? How does a tornado form? Several questions that Estelle once again will attempt to answer on the PPT below.

Sleep

Because RAAM is a non stop race from the West coast to the East coast, the key to success for the riders is to stay on their bikes as long as they possibly can, days and nights. Therefore, sleep is reduced to a minimum amount of time. As a consequence, sleep deprivation plays a huge role on RAAM. Usually, the best riders during the race sleep around 9 hours…..in 9 days of race. Yes, that’s about 1 hour of sleep per day! They usually don’t sleep the first 40 hours of race.

But what is sleep exactly? Why some people need 10 hours per night while others function well with 4 hours only? What are the effects of sleep deprivation? What is the world record for the longest period without any sleep?

I’ve asked my daughter Estelle to do a PowerPoint presentation about sleep. You’ll find plenty of information by clicking on the picture below.
